University of Medicine and Dentistry

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) is the nation’s largest free-standing, public health sciences university, with more than 6,000 students on five campuses, its only dental school, a graduate school of biomedical sciences, a school of health-related professions, a school of nursing, and New Jersey’s only school of public health.

PSE&G’s Carbon Abatement Pilot Program greatly reduced the financial burden on UMDNJ and enabled it to make much needed infrastructure upgrades by providing up-front funding for the total cost of the energy conservation project. After completion, the hospital paid back a portion of the total project cost on its PSE&G utility bill at zero percent interest over 36 months.

DCO upgraded the central plant and HVAC systems at the teaching hospital. The project implementation phase was held to 18 months and was completed without interruption to the hospital’s services. The work under this program included the installation of new boilers, chillers and air handling units, and upgraded lighting controls.
